It was off to the continent and seeking a good opportunity to run against some tough European competitors for Russel in the B&S Kurpfalz Gala Germany on May 18, 2024.

With a world athletics continental tour 2024 designation, there was also a chance to run against some Asian representation from India as athletes had registered to take part, no doubt looking to maximise opportunity to look for competition that could facilitate Olympic qualification aspirations.

Animesh Kujur from India was the 200m athlete going up against Russel with a recent PB of 20.62 he achieved just a week earlier at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar India.

Alas it was a bit of a damp landscape in arrival in Weinheim and at the Sepp Herberger Stadium, with overcast skies and rain showers aplenty.

A bit of a delay for the race start time of 3.30pm ensued, but Russel warmed up well and combated start time delay, and the weather just about held off for the race.

At the finishing line it was Dutch athlete Xavi Mo-Ajok, taking first with 20.73, and his compatriot Nsikak Ekpo in third 21.07, with Animesh Kujur taking second in 20.96.

So a fourth place for Russel and 21.33.

A good competitive experience for Russel to continue the season’s development work, and a well organised event from our German hosts, our thanks to the organisers, and as Russel commented “definitely come back to this meet at the next opportunity!”
