Following the overseas trip to the SEA games in the Philippines and a January training camp in KL Malaysia it was back to Australia for the athlete, and a fast turn around of focus, straight into 2020’s first major track meet of the year at the Melbourne Track Classic.
In the mens 200m it was an expected strong lineup with many athletes striving for Tokyo Olympic qualification this year.
On to the final and at the tape it was gold for John Gikas (20.91) edging out Rio Olympian Alex Hartmann in second to win the men’s 200m.
Russel placed 7th for the final (21.44) representing Malaysia, and a decent showing to start the Australian competitive circuit schedule, and great to be back vying for honours amongst a top field.
